Chapters 11-20
During the trip the storyteller realizes that he should not influence Mr. Strickland decision as they are not good friends and the artist is not in need of his advice . Strickland stays in a cheap hotel and after a conversation with the narrator , the latter understands that the man will not return. Charles decides to become an artist , leaving his family ,so he wants to start to draw . The wife gets his idea , now she hates Charles and has no desire to return him back or have a relationship anymore. Her sister helps her with the children and Charles provides her with financial support.
The five year has already passed since narrator's last meeting with Charles.Being again in Paris the storyteller faces him after the meeting with his Dirk Stroeve , his old friend. Dirk is not an artist with a great talent but in his turn he gets money from his pictures . Charles becomes another person in comparison with his former appearance. The narrator finds out a that the man is in need of money. Dirk appreciates Strickland's paintings.
